Provenance
The present lot will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity provided by the Comité Henri Hayden.Provenance:Christie's, New York, sale of May 11, 1979, lot 147.Acquired directly from the above sale.Lot Essay:A passionate chess enthusiast, Henri Hayden frequently wove references to the game into his paintings. Far more than a leisurely diversion, chess represented a profound intellectual pursuit that resonated with the broader philosophical currents of the time. This connection was particularly pronounced in the early 1950s, a period shaped by his close friendship with writer Samuel Beckett, himself a dedicated player. Their shared interest in chess reflected a mutual preoccupation with strategy, abstraction, and existential tension: ideas that also found meaningful echoes in the life and collecting vision of Sidney Rothberg.
